Kakum National Park

Central Region, Ghana

Overview

Kakum National Park is one of Ghana's most spectacular natural treasures, covering approximately 375 square kilometers of pristine tropical rainforest in the Central Region. Established as a national park in 1992, this protected area is renowned for its incredible biodiversity and the famous canopy walkway that offers visitors a unique perspective of the forest ecosystem. The park is home to hundreds of species of birds, butterflies, and mammals, including the endangered forest elephant and various monkey species.

The crown jewel of Kakum National Park is undoubtedly the canopy walkway, a series of suspension bridges and platforms that take you 40 meters above the forest floor, stretching for 350 meters through the treetops. This engineering marvel, one of only three in Africa, provides breathtaking views and unparalleled opportunities to observe forest wildlife in their natural habitat. Beyond the canopy walkway, the park offers guided nature walks, bird watching tours, and educational programs about rainforest conservation and the importance of preserving Ghana's natural heritage.

Travel Information

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to March is ideal for visiting as the canopy walkway is less slippery and wildlife is more active. Early morning visits (6-8 AM) offer the best wildlife viewing and bird watching opportunities. The park is open year-round but may close during heavy rains for safety reasons.

Canopy Walkway Experience

The canopy walkway consists of 7 bridges connecting 6 tree platforms, suspended 40 meters above ground. The walk takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. Safety harnesses are mandatory and provided. The walkway can accommodate up to 8 people at a time and is not recommended for those with vertigo or heart conditions.

Rainforest Highlights & Nearby Attractions

Kakum's canopy walkway is one of only three in Africa and the longest in the world, stretching 350 meters through the forest canopy at a height of 40 meters. It was constructed by Canadian engineers and local Ghanaian experts using traditional rope and wire techniques.

The park is home to the endangered forest elephant, a smaller subspecies of African elephant adapted to forest life. These elusive creatures are rarely seen but their presence is indicated by feeding signs and tracks throughout the forest.

Bird watching is exceptional with over 300 species including the African grey parrot, hornbills, turacos, and the rare white-breasted guineafowl. The park is considered one of West Africa's premier bird watching destinations.

Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former slave trading fort, is located just 30km away. Visitors can easily combine a historical tour of the castle with a nature experience at Kakum in a single day.

The park features a treehouse platform where visitors can camp overnight in the forest canopy, offering a unique opportunity to experience the rainforest at night and hear the sounds of nocturnal wildlife. Advance booking is essential for this special experience.
