Volta Region, Ghana
Wli Waterfalls, also known as Agumatsa Falls, is the highest waterfall in Ghana and West Africa, cascading from a height of approximately 143 meters (469 feet). Located in the Wli Nature Reserve near the village of Wli in the Volta Region, this magnificent natural wonder is surrounded by lush tropical forest and offers a breathtaking spectacle of nature's power and beauty.
The waterfall consists of two main sections: the upper falls and the lower falls. The lower falls are easily accessible and popular among tourists, while the upper falls require a more challenging hike through the forest. The area is home to a diverse ecosystem with hundreds of butterfly species, birds, and the famous Mona monkeys that inhabit the surrounding forest. The local community considers the falls sacred and believes they have spiritual significance.
The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to March when the trails are less slippery and the water flow is still impressive. The rainy season (April to October) offers the most powerful water flow but can make hiking challenging.
The lower falls are easily accessible with a 45-minute walk on a relatively flat trail. The upper falls require a more challenging 2-3 hour hike through the forest with some steep sections. Good hiking shoes are recommended.
Plan for a half-day trip to visit the lower falls (3-4 hours total). For both upper and lower falls, allow a full day (6-7 hours) including hiking, swimming, and relaxation time at the falls.
